Visiting Our Ancestors: A Tour of Prairie du Chien's Historic Cemeteries

On Saturday, October 3, 2020, tour begins at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at the Fort Crawford Museum, located at 717 S. Beaumont Rd. All will gather at the museum, then travel via their own conveyance to the cemeteries. The tour is approximately 2 hours in duration. Guests are asked to report to the museum 10 minutes before their scheduled tour. Space is limited and reservations are required.
The first stop is the Frenchtown Cemetery, blessed in 1817. It is the oldest cemetery in Wisconsin. A guide to the past will introduce the visitors to Prairie du Chien as it was at the beginning of the 19th century and relate the history of the cemetery. Visitors will then meet Monsieur Joseph Rolette and Madamoiselle Elizabeth Rolette. his daughter.
The guide will then escort the visitors across Frenchtown Road to Calvary Cemetery. The history of this cemetery includes a story about rivalry. Visitors will be escorted to three sites in the cemetery to meet Daniel G. Fenton, Esquire, Emily Dousman Barrette, and Madame Jane Fisher Rolette Dousman. Along the way, they may also see Albert, the great historian of Frenchtown.
The last stop will be the Fort Crawford Soldiers' Lot on South Beaumont Road. A fine, raised crypt is the finally resting place of Colonel Willoughby Morgan, who was a commanding officer at both the first and second Fort Crawford. He will be joined by a widow, one of many whose husbands died while stationed at Fort Crawford.
The cost is $15.00 per person for Visiting Our Ancestors: A Tour of Prairie du Chien’s Historic Cemeteries, which also includes admission to the Fort Crawford Museum.
